Florida Adoption Home Study Services

Required for all domestic and international adoptions in Florida, and completed personally by Christen Hartig, LCSW, for every family we serve.

What Is a Florida Adoption Home Study?

Florida adoption law requires an approved home study for all domestic and international adoptions. The home study is reviewed by child-placing agencies, attorneys, judges, and, in the case of international adoptions, state and foreign governments. It is typically the first formal step in the adoption process, and many families complete their home study before selecting an adoption agency.

What Does the Home Study Evaluate?

The home study is designed to assess three core areas:

  1. Genuine desire to parent: that the decision to adopt is thoughtful, informed, and sincerely motivated
  2. Emotional and financial resources: that the household is stable and equipped to support a child
  3. Safe home environment: that the physical living situation is appropriate and secure

There is no such thing as a perfect family, and that's not what the home study is looking for. We hear over and over from families after completion: "Wow, that was easier than I thought it would be." Our goal is to make this an educational, supportive experience, not a stressful one.

Adoption Support Services of Florida is "your adoption advocate." Our purpose is not to evaluate you like an inspector. It is to guide and assist you through the process so you can move forward toward your family with confidence.

What's Included in Our Home Study Service?

Adoption Support Services of Florida manages every aspect of your home study. Our focused practice means we stay current with all applicable requirements, including:

  • Florida Department of Children and Families regulations
  • Department of Homeland Security (DHS) requirements
  • USCIS requirements for international adoptions
  • Country-of-origin requirements for international adoptions

Documentation and Paperwork

We provide complete documentation checklists so you always know exactly what you need. We guide you through gathering background checks, personal references, financial records, health statements, and any other required materials, and we handle the coordination and submission on your behalf.

Home Visit

Christen will travel to your home anywhere in Florida at no additional charge. This is a friendly, conversational visit, not an inspection. Think of it as an opportunity to get to know each other and for Christen to understand your family's story.

Written Home Study Report

Once complete, you receive a PDF of your home study along with our agency license. If your home study needs to be forwarded to an adoption agency, attorney, or other entity, we'll do that at no additional charge. Just ask.

Ongoing Support

Our relationship does not end when the home study is complete. Christen will continue to be available to you throughout your adoption process, and she genuinely looks forward to meeting your child.

How Long Does the Home Study Take?

Because you will never be waiting on us, you are the driving force behind the timeline. Most families complete paperwork submission within two to four weeks. If your timeline is urgent:

  • Expedited home study services are available
  • Most expedited studies are completed within hours after all documents are received
  • Some motivated families have received approval within one week of starting

We begin the day you say "go", even if that's the same day you first contact us.

Independent vs. Agency Home Study

Some adoptions allow a home study by an independent licensed social worker; others legally require one completed by a licensed child-placing agency. Adoption Support Services of Florida holds both credentials: we are a licensed child-placing agency, and Christen is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker. This dual licensure means you are fully covered regardless of how your adoption requirements are structured, or if they change mid-process.

Frequently Asked Questions

Required documents typically include: birth certificates for all household members, marriage certificate or divorce decree (if applicable), proof of income and financial stability, personal reference letters, health statements from a physician, background checks and fingerprinting (FBI and FDLE), and a home environment assessment. We provide a complete checklist so nothing is missed.

Yes, and many families do. It's actually quite common to complete your home study before selecting an adoption agency. We're happy to help you explore your adoption options as part of the process, and once your home study is approved, it can be forwarded to whatever agency or attorney you ultimately choose.

If you've already selected an adoption agency or attorney, We work closely with them throughout the process. We coordinate directly so that your adoption moves forward smoothly without unnecessary delays or confusion. Our job is to be a seamless partner in your process, not an obstacle.

Yes. Adoption Support Services of Florida serves families anywhere in the state of Florida. Christen will travel to your home for the required home visit at no travel expense to you. There are no geographic limitations to where we can help within Florida.
