What Is a Florida Adoption Home Study? A Complete Guide

If you are beginning the adoption process in Florida, the home study is likely one of the first terms you encountered, and one of the first steps you'll need to complete. This guide explains exactly what a Florida adoption home study is, what it requires, what to expect, and how to make the process as smooth and stress-free as possible.

What Is a Florida Adoption Home Study?

A home study is a formal assessment of a prospective adoptive family, required by Florida law for all domestic and international adoptions. It is prepared by a licensed social worker or child-placing agency and used by adoption agencies, attorneys, courts, and, in international adoptions, government entities in the child's birth country, to evaluate whether you are prepared and equipped to adopt.

Despite the name, a home study is not simply a visit to your home. It is a comprehensive process that includes interviews, document review, background checks, and a written report summarizing the findings.

Why Is a Home Study Required?

The home study exists to protect the interests of children being placed for adoption. It ensures that every child is placed with a family that has been evaluated by a licensed professional, someone who can confirm the family's stability, motivation, and readiness to parent.

For adoptive families, the home study is also an opportunity. It is a chance to reflect on your motivations and readiness, learn more about the adoption process, and receive guidance from an experienced professional before your child arrives home.

The home study is not designed to find a perfect family. No such thing exists. It is designed to ensure you have a genuine desire to parent and the emotional and practical resources to do so. Families consistently tell us that the experience was far less intimidating than they expected.

Who Can Complete a Florida Adoption Home Study?

In Florida, a home study must be completed by a licensed social worker or a licensed child-placing agency. The specific requirement depends on your adoption type:

  • Some adoption circumstances require a home study completed by a licensed child-placing agency
  • Others require one completed by a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW)
  • Some can be completed by either

This distinction matters. If you hire a social worker who only holds one type of license and your adoption circumstances change or require the other, you may need to start over. At Adoption Support Services of Florida, Christen Hartig holds both credentials, which means you're covered regardless of how your adoption unfolds.

What Does the Home Study Process Include?

While requirements can vary based on adoption type, a typical Florida adoption home study includes:

1. Personal Interviews

Each adult living in your household will be interviewed by the social worker. These conversations cover topics such as your background, family history, parenting experience or philosophy, reasons for choosing adoption, and your understanding of the adoption process.

2. Home Visit

The social worker will visit your home to assess the environment where your child will live. This is not a white-glove inspection. It is a friendly, conversational visit focused on understanding your family's daily life and ensuring your home is a safe, suitable environment for a child.

3. Background Checks and Fingerprinting

All adult household members are typically required to complete FBI and FDLE (Florida Department of Law Enforcement) fingerprinting and background checks. This is a standard requirement for adoption in Florida.

4. Reference Letters

Personal references, typically from people who know you well but are not family members, will be requested to speak to your character, relationship skills, and readiness to parent.

5. Health Documentation

You will need health statements from a licensed physician confirming that you are in good physical and mental health to parent a child.

6. Financial Documentation

Financial stability is a factor in the home study. This does not mean you need to be wealthy. It means demonstrating that you have the financial resources to provide for a child. Pay stubs, tax returns, or bank statements are commonly required.

7. The Written Home Study Report

Once all interviews and documentation are complete, your social worker prepares a comprehensive written report summarizing the findings. This report is submitted to the relevant adoption entities. Your agency, attorney, court, or government, for review and approval.

What Happens After the Home Study Is Approved?

Once your home study is approved, you'll receive a copy of the report. We provide your completed home study as a PDF along with our agency license, and we'll forward copies to any adoption entity that needs them at no additional charge.

An approved home study does not expire immediately. It is typically valid for a defined period and can often be updated rather than fully redone if your circumstances change. Your social worker can advise you on the specific timeline.

Importantly, your relationship with your social worker doesn't have to end here. Christen remains available throughout the rest of the adoption process and will complete any required post-placement visits after your child comes home.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes. Florida law requires an approved home study for all domestic and international adoptions. Stepparent and relative adoptions may have different or reduced requirements. Contact us to discuss your specific situation.

The home visit is a personal meeting between your family and the social worker, conducted in your home. It is a friendly, conversational visit, not a formal inspection. The social worker will speak with each adult in the household, observe the home environment, and discuss your family's readiness and motivation to adopt. Most families find it much less stressful than they anticipated.

Generally, yes, as long as your home study was completed by an appropriately licensed provider and is still within its validity period. One significant advantage of having your home study completed independently (rather than through the same agency handling your placement) is that it belongs to you. If you choose to switch agencies, your home study travels with you. Our clients have navigated agency changes without having to redo their home study.
